1. What does the city’s name Kuala Lumpur signify?
“Kuala Lumpur” in Malay means “confluence of muddy waters”? The name comes from the convergence of rivers in the area, carrying layers of black mud. Kuala Lumpur was founded ca. 1857 at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers. In English, the name Kuala Lumpur literally means “muddy confluence”. The venture into the muddy confluence started when a member of the Selangor royal family hired tin prospectors to open tin mines in the Klang Valley.
2. Kuala Lumpur’s distinctive cuisine
If you are a food lover like Pham Viet Hung and Happy Feet, you must taste the nasi lemak, satay, bak kut teh, and cendol. They are “out of this world”! You know what, I believe street food stalls are also designed for food lovers like us in mind. It gives us an excellent choice to experience local cuisine; that is to walk from one stall to another until your stomach goes on strike and says “break-time”!
3. The Petronas Twin Towers
This twin-towers were once the tallest building in the world with a height of up to 451.9m (1,482 ft), the Petronas Twin Towers used to be the tallest building in the world from 1998 to 2004. It was designed by Argentinean architect César Pelli and has become one of Kuala Lumpur’s iconic landmarks.
4. Religions, Traditions and Cultures
When you’re in the city, you can visit many local temples, churches, and historical sites. Don’t forget to head out of the metropolis and visit the spiritual Batu Caves, a limestone hill riddled with caves and cave temples. Happy Feet did climb the 272 steps to the shrine of Hindu Lord Murugan that is visited by over a million pilgrims every year on the annual Thaipusam festival and Royal Selangor.
5. The city was once a rubber plantation
In the 19th century, Kuala Lumpur was initially built as a rubber plantation by an Englishman named William Henry Leefe. Later on, it became a major gold mining center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the city has become a financial, commercial, and tourism center of Southeast Asia.
6. Local Tourist Spots and Shopping Centers
Not only famous tourist spots, but Kuala Lumpur also has many local areas worth exploring such as Petaling Street’s Chinatown, Jalan Alor’s food street, and KLCC’s central old town.
Kuala Lumpur is also a shopping paradise with many large shopping centers such as Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL, and Lot 10. You will find famous international brands and local products here. Happy Feet spotted Simone Nga of AV Travel here a few times in the past but she was too busy handling her shopping bags so she failed to waive back!
